Fethiye or Antalya: which is better for your holiday?

We started in Fethiye and are now opening in Antalya, so we know both. Here is the honest comparison.

Antalya: a big city with history, resorts and a nearby airport.

In short: choose Fethiye for a smaller, slower holiday built around nature: the Ölüdeniz lagoon, paragliding, boat days and the Lycian Way. Choose Antalya for a big city with history, a choice of resorts, theme parks and an airport with flights to many destinations. If you can, combine them: the coast road between them is one of the most beautiful in Turkey.

Nature and the sea

Fethiye: nature on a human scale, from the lagoon to the Lycian Way.

Fethiye wins for scenery on a human scale. The Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz, Butterfly Valley, the 12 Islands and the Lycian Way are all close together, and you can fly over them on a tandem paraglider from Babadağ. Antalya's nature is bigger and more spread out: the Taurus Mountains, Köprülü Canyon, the Düden waterfalls and, further west, Suluada and the Olympos coast. Expect more driving in Antalya.

History and city life

Antalya wins here. Kaleiçi's walls, Hadrian's Gate and the old harbour are in the city centre, and Perge, Aspendos and Side are a day trip away. Antalya Museum is one of the best in Turkey. Fethiye has the Lycian rock tombs, Kayaköy and Tlos nearby, but it is a town rather than a city: fewer museums, fewer cultural events, an earlier night.

Beaches

Fethiye's beaches are smaller coves and the famous lagoon, often reached by boat. Antalya has long city beaches, Konyaaltı (pebbly) and Lara, plus resort beaches in Belek, Side and Kemer. For long walks along the sea Antalya is better; for a postcard swim, Fethiye.

Family holidays

Both work well. Fethiye suits families who like calm water and simple days; the lagoon is shallow and sheltered. Antalya suits families who want variety: an aquarium, theme parks, large resorts with kids' clubs and short airport transfers. See our family holiday in Antalya guide.

Getting there

Antalya Airport is one of Turkey's busiest and is close to the city and the resorts. Fethiye is served by Dalaman Airport, about an hour's drive away. If flight choice and a short transfer matter, Antalya has the edge; see Antalya airport transfer or Dalaman airport transfer.

Winter and long stays

Antalya keeps running all year as a city; Fethiye gets very quiet but is lovely for walkers and people who want peace. Remote workers who want co-working, a bigger social scene and services usually prefer Antalya. See Antalya in winter and Fethiye in winter.

Our honest verdict

  • First time on the coast, love nature: Fethiye.
  • Want history, a city and lots of choice: Antalya.
  • Short break with the shortest transfer: Antalya.
  • Adventure (paragliding, hiking, boats): Fethiye, with Köprülü rafting as Antalya's answer.
  • Two weeks: do both.

Whichever you choose, IONETO's motto travels with you: mutlu insan dünyayı aydınlatır, a happy person lights up the world. Start with the Antalya guide or the Fethiye guide.
