The walk starts at Hadrian's Gate and ends on the clifftop at sunset.

In short: a good Kaleiçi walk starts at Hadrian's Gate, crosses to the Clock Tower and the Yivli Minaret, winds down through the lanes to the old harbour, then climbs to Hıdırlık Tower and Karaalioğlu Park. Allow 2.5–4 hours with stops. Go early in the morning in summer, or in the late afternoon to finish with the sunset.

1. Hadrian's Gate

Start on Atatürk Avenue at Hadrian's Gate (Üçkapılar, "the three gates"). The marble arch was built in AD 130 to honour the Roman emperor Hadrian's visit and is the main pedestrian entrance to the old town. Look down as you pass: the stone paving still shows ruts worn by ancient cart wheels.

2. The Clock Tower and Yivli Minaret

Walk west to Kalekapısı square, where the Clock Tower marks the top of the old bazaar streets. Just beside it rises the Yivli Minaret, the fluted brick minaret built in the 13th century under the Seljuk sultan Alaeddin Keykubad. It is about 38 metres tall and the city's best-known landmark. The mosque is free to visit outside prayer times; dress modestly.

3. The lanes of Kaleiçi

From here, let yourself get a little lost. The lanes slope down towards the sea between Ottoman-era houses with timber bay windows, bougainvillea and quiet courtyards, many now boutique hotels and cafés. Look out for the Suna and İnan Kıraç Kaleiçi Museum in a restored Ottoman mansion if you want an indoor stop. Wear shoes with grip: the stones are smooth and the lanes steep in places.

4. The old harbour

The lanes end at the old harbour, which has sheltered boats since Roman times. Today it is full of excursion boats, fishing boats and cafés. This is where boat trips to the Düden waterfall leave; if you want a short sea trip, compare options in our Antalya boat trips guide. Take the stairs or the lift back up to the clifftop.

5. Kesik Minaret

On the way south, stop at the Kesik ("broken") Minaret. The building began as a Roman temple, became a Byzantine church and then a mosque in the Seljuk period. It was damaged by fire in the 19th century and today stands as a ruin you can view from outside.

6. Hıdırlık Tower and Karaalioğlu Park

Wear shoes with grip: the stones are smooth and some lanes are steep.

Finish at Hıdırlık Tower, a 14-metre Roman tower from the 2nd century AD at the southern edge of Kaleiçi, possibly built as a lighthouse or a tomb. It stands at the end of Karaalioğlu Park, a free clifftop garden with benches, shade and views over the bay to the mountains. In the late afternoon a small crowd gathers here for the sunset; arrive 20 minutes early for a good spot. More ideas in our Antalya sunset spots guide.

Tips for the walk

  • Timing: summer mornings before 11:00 or after 16:00; any time in winter.
  • Water and shade: carry water; take breaks in courtyard cafés.
  • With a pushchair: the lanes are passable but bumpy and steep near the harbour.
  • Prices: check menus before you sit down in the busiest streets.
  • Photos: soft morning light is best for the lanes, golden hour for the harbour and the tower.
